Tshisekedi inspects the distribution network of the Kakobola hydroelectric power plant
Kakobola Hydroelectric Plant to Supply Electricity to Over 9,000 Households in Kwilu Province
During his visit to Kikwit on Thursday, March 26, 2026, President Félix Tshisekedi inspected the commissioning of the Kakobola hydroelectric power plant, an initiative set to supply electricity to more than 9,000 households.
The inspection spanned from the Kakobola power station to the 66/33 kV Infra substation, marking a key step toward distributing electricity to REGIDESO, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and households already connected to the grid.
This project represents a historic milestone for Kwilu province, which has long faced electricity shortages. It is expected to revitalize the local economy by enabling production units, improving social services, generating employment, reducing energy costs, and ensuring a reliable electricity supply.
The plant will also help alleviate chronic power deficits, encourage industrial decentralization, and foster regional development.
The Kakobola facility is the first and only hydroelectric dam in Kwilu, with a total capacity of 10.5 megawatts, achieved through three units of 3.5 megawatts each.
The power generated will benefit the cities of Kikwit, Gungu, and Idiofa, initially targeting over 9,000 households, with an eventual reach of more than 400,000 residents.
Located in the Gungu territory, the project was developed in partnership with Indian company Angelique International Ltd. For now, its management is handled by SNEL while preparations continue to transition operations to a private operator.
